Unnecessary Sequel of the Day: 64-year-old Amos Wayne Richards of Concord, North Carolia, who was found after four days of crawling through Utah’s Canyonlands, told the press he was inspired to follow in the footsteps of mountain climber Aron Ralston after watching Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours.
Unfortunately, he was also inspired to break his leg after falling 10 feet near Little Blue John Canyon, where Ralston took his infamous tumble.
After managing to snap a dislocated shoulder back into place, Richards attempted to follow his footprints back to his car, crawling nearly five miles before being rescued by park rangers who noticed he was missing from his campsite.
Canyonlands chief ranger Denny Ziemann said Richards put himself in serious danger by hiking alone and neglecting to inform officials of his hiking plans.
Richards was taken to a hospital in Moab to be treated for a broken leg and dehydration before being released to return to North Carolina.
